yes – you should use checklists.

i use checklists for everything i do – including packing for a trip or vacation.

if you want to go further, a great book about checklists is “the checklist manifesto: how to get things right” by atul gawande.

the cpa who asked me this question has called me a few times over the years when he had serious problems both in poorly prepared tax returns with insufficient backup and negligently prepared financial statements.

i helped him considerably and he got out of situations (barely) that caused him many sleepless nights. i always pointed out that if he used such and such checklist, he most likely would have avoided the problems he had and, in my opinion, created.

now he asks me if they are “really that necessary”?
