to be sure, tax and accounting employment nudged slightly down in july, according to the latest data available to 卡塔尔世界杯常规比赛时间 research. but it remains ahead of last year’s figures. and record highs are popping in key hiring segments, including staff, cpa firms and payroll services. is talk of staffing shortages overblown, or would growth be even stronger if more qualified candidates were available?
earnings are all over the map. records have been notched at cpa firms and for payroll staff. meanwhile, overall staff earnings are at their lowest point of 2024.
the national unemployment rate rose by 0.2 percentage point to 4.3 percent, and the number of people unemployed increased by 352,000 to 7.2 million. one year ago, the jobless rate was 3.5 percent, and the number of unemployed people was 5.9 million. total nonfarm payroll employment is up by 114,000, below the average monthly gain of 215,000 seen over the prior 12 months. employment in professional and business services showed little change in july.
employment in the accounting profession is down slightly, with the july mark of 1,172,100 reflecting a decline of 4,400 or 0.4 percent for the month but growth of 19,100 or 1.7 percent for the year. workers average 35.3 hours, down 12 minutes or 0.6 percent for the month and 18 minutes or 0.8 percent for the year. they’re earning $41.36 an hour, down a nickel or 0.1 percent for the month but up 19 cents or 0.5 percent for the year.

staff number 857,200, a new high, up 2,400 or 0.3 percent for the month and 16,800 or 2 percent for the year. they work 34.7 hours, down 18 minutes or 0.9 percent for the month and 42 minutes or 2 percent for the year. hourly earnings at $32.32 are at their lowest point this year, down 46 cents or 1.4 percent for the month but up 63 cents or 2 percent for the year.
cpa firms
cpa firm employment is at a record 562,600, up 5,900 or 1.1 percent for the month and 10,200 or 1.8 percent for the year. they put in 35.9 hours, down 42 minutes or 1.9 percent for the month and 1 hour 6 minutes or 3 percent for the year. earnings have risen four straight months to reach a record $44.07, up 15 cents or 0.3 percent for the month and 70 cents or 1.6 percent for the year.
staff at cpa firms also are marking a new high, at 387,800 – up 7,300 or 1.9 percent for the month and 6,200 or 1.6 percent for the year. hours at 35.2 are flat for the month and down half an hour or 1.4 percent for the year. hourly earnings at $33.69 are down, 23 cents or 0.7 percent for the month and 31 cents or 0.9 percent for the year.
tax preparation services
tax prep services employ 100,000, down 3,500 or 3.4 percent for the month but up 500 or 0.5 percent for the year.
payroll services
payroll services have capped a fourth straight month of growth with a record mark of 234,200, up 6,000 or 2.6 percent for the month and 13,600 or 6.2 percent for the year. employees average 35.2 hours, down 12 minutes or 0.6 percent for the month but up 1 hour 6 minutes or 3.2 percent for the year. they make $38.44, down 20 cents or 0.5 percent for the month but up $1.35 or 3.6 percent for the year.
staff at payroll have risen seven months to a new high of 209,300, up 4,900 or 2.4 percent for the month and 25,700 or 14 percent for the year. they work 34.9 hours, up half an hour or 1.5 percent for the month but down 1 hour 42 minutes or 4.6 percent for the year. earnings increased slightly to a record $36.45, up 17 cents or 0.5 percent for the month and $4.07 or 12.6 percent for the year.
bookkeeping
other accounting services employ 281,600, down 2,100 or 0.7 percent for the month and 1,800 or 0.6 percent for the year.
women
women in the profession total 751,300, down 5,200 or 0.7 percent for the month but up 22,800 or 3.1 percent for the year. in cpa firms they’ve increased five months to reach a record 342,700, up 1,100 or 0.3 percent for the month and 13,200 or 4 percent for the year. in payroll services they number 109,400, up 2,700 or 2.5 percent for the month but down 5,000 or 4.4 percent for the year.
