but surprise questions can elicit not only technical expertise but attitudes, adaptability, personality, creativity, intelligence and approaches to problem-solving. here are 10.
problem-solving
- what would you do if you found a discrepancy of $1.01 in a $10 million balance sheet? (look for understanding of materiality and importance of professional skepticism.)
- a client is angry that you haven’t eliminated all income taxes. what do you say? (look for gentle reasoning.)
- you have a question that only the irs can answer with authority, but agents never respond to your request. what would you do? (look for recognition of alternate sources of information.)
creativity
- is there a role for creativity in accounting? give a hypothetical, or even real, example. (a first-job applicant might have trouble with this one, but the experienced should have real examples.)
- how would you convince an undocumented immigrant to report income to the irs? (look for gentle and rational persuasiveness.)
- how would you explain deferred taxes to a 10-year-old? (look for analogies and non-technical language.)
- how might you get a client to really enjoy keeping better records? (look for specifics and practical applicability.)
ethics
- if a partner asked you to not cook the books exactly but maybe warm them up a bit, what would you do? (look for integrity, courage, tactfulness and professionalism.)
- if you noticed a colleague fudging the numbers to make a client happy, what would you do? (look for professionalism as well as recognition of teamwork.)
- have you ever been faced with a questionable ethical situation? if not, do you know of someone else who was? (follow up with questions about decision-making process and resolution.)
have some sympathy for your candidate. all these questions need thoughtful answers, so look for a thoughtful process. consider letting the candidate answer in writing (without artificial intelligence assistance).
