here are 10 warning signs of a candidate who might be a better fit somewhere else.
- vague or evasive answers. “i don’t know” is a better answer than vague, wandering, imprecise avoidance. look for specifics in answers about past accomplishments and responsibilities.
- blaming others for past issues. negativity about a former job or colleagues is a bad sign. if the candidate wants to blame a bad manager, ask for specifics. ask what the candidate should have done differently.
- lack of curiosity or questions. lack of questions indicates lack of knowledge about or interest in the firm. lack of curiosity hints at a reluctance to learn.
- overemphasis on work-life balance. while a candidate should be honest about how much time will be dedicated to the job, too much concern may indicate a lack of commitment to the firm.
- poor communication skills. if answers confuse you, imagine what they’d do to a client. look for (and test for) ability to explain things clearly, to speak and write correctly, to converse smoothly.
- exaggerated résumé. watch out for a candidate who can’t give specific information about stated qualifications and experience. a little padding is normal, but ask the questions to confirm claims.
- resistance to technology. candidates should show eagerness to use the latest technology, not insistence that the old way is good enough.
- minimal team orientation. if candidate talks about a project and mentions “i” but not others on the team, he may be a lone wolf who won’t fit in with teams and culture.
- inflexibility. the good candidate will be open to new ways of doing things and new skills to learn. “that’s not the way we did it at my old firm” probably isn’t a good answer.
- lack of energy. look for enthusiasm, eagerness for something new or challenging, readiness to get to work and a history of productivity and creativity. lack of preparation for the interview is a sign of sloth.
before interviewing a candidate, think of questions that might elicit these red flags. don’t dismiss the potential of a candidate who shows a warning sign or two, but ask more questions in those areas.
