i’m looking over the early responses to our new cpa careers survey and one stands out for its practicality and wisdom. this from a veteran senior finance manager at a fortune 1000 company is, i think, 18 pieces of the best advice i’ve ever heard.

1. for the accountant who is not a cpa yet: if you’re not  a cpa already, make it a goal.

2. if you need hours, apply to every accounting firm that you could drive to or are willing to move close to.

crowdsourcing for accounting practices

going beyond outsourcing and virtual workers.

the days are long gone when the only way to build your business was by hiring full-time employees. now there are so many more choices. many employees are interested in part-time work. some prefer to work virtually, which frees a company up from being limited to local talent. and then there’s crowdsourcing, a whole new way to tap into talented labor on a project-by-project basis.

crowdsourcing is a special way to outsource a task. with outsourcing, you know exactly who will be doing the task. with crowdsourcing, you don’t; people just show up and contribute. wikipedia calls it “distributed problem-solving.” read more →

in this report:

  • employment trends for the public accounting, bookkeeping, tax and payroll sector of the economy.
  • licensed cpa firms are lagging in growth behind non-cpa accounting providers.
  • employees book more hours.
  • but wage growth gets cut back.
  • more jobs and better pay for higher-paid positions and for men; fewer new jobs and smaller pay increases for women and production workers.
  • cpa firms add to headcounts more slowly than non-cpa firms, grant lower pay increases, and hire back fewer women.
