you have a friend inside the irs. it’s the taxpayer advocate service. technically, it’s part of the irs, but legally, it reports directly to congress and the congressional desire to make life as simple as possible for you.
the tas has two main objectives:

  1. to help individuals resolve difficulties with filing their taxes.
  2. to identify systemic problems and suggest solutions.

to fulfill the problem/solution objective, the tas presents an annual report to congress. the report identifies at least 20 serious systemic problems. theoretically, congress will look askance at the irs, and the irs will take heed and make life a little easier for taxpayers and tax preparers.

depending on how quickly the irs reacts, the problems detailed in the 2015 annual report may make this year’s tax season a little easier. some of the problems, however, will need long-term consideration. but that’s better than no consideration.

the u.s. tax, accounting and bookkeeping industries are turning out to be one of the brightest spots in the nation’s economy, growing at about 5 percent a year, with payroll agencies now turning in the strongest performance.

wage growth, on the other hand, is showing signs of slowing down.

a good year for small business clients

many small businesses may be better prepared for the bumpy 2016 that many economists are predicting. new data from sageworks show the typical small business with revenue under $5 million a year grew by almost 8 percent in sales and widened profit margins by more than a percentage point to 7.5 percent.

small businesses, on average, experienced an increase in sales growth for the first time in three years and an increase in net profit margin for the fourth straight year.

the financial information company looked back at sales and profitability trends among small businesses in five key client sectors for the past five years – construction, retail, professional services, health care and accommodations and food services – and found that sales growth accelerated in all but professional services and retail. key insights from sageworks’ data:
