except for payroll services, all tax and accounting sectors are seeing higher earnings year over year. overall pay was up 6.7 percent, with cpa firm staff pay close behind at 6.6 percent. cpa firms beat the national 7.7 percent inflation rate, increasing hourly earnings by a heady 9.2 percent.

other increases of 5 percent or more year over year were seen in payroll services employment overall, in staff and by women. the flip side is that the only down that deep also came in payroll services – in earnings. more people sharing the same pie? or no need to pay premium as workers are less scarce?

nationally, the unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.7 percent in november, and has stayed between 3.5 percent and 3.7 percent since march. total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 263,000 in november and 6 million people were unemployed.

professional and business services added only 6,000 jobs in november. monthly job growth in the sector has averaged 58,000 so far in 2022, down from 94,000 a month in 2021.

there were 1,121,300 people in the accounting profession in november, the latest data available, down 600 or 0.1 percent for the month but up 49,400 or 4.6 percent for the year. they worked an average of 36.2 hours per week, down 12 minutes or 0.5 percent for the month but up 6 minutes or 0.3 percent for the year. they earned $40 an hour, down 24 cents or 0.6 percent for the month but up $2.52 or 6.7 percent for the year.

staff numbered 807,900, up 700 or 0.1 percent for the month and 25,600 or 3.3 percent for the year. they put in 35.4 hours, up 6 minutes or 0.3 percent for the hour and 42 minutes or 2 percent for the year. they made $30.38, up 13 cents or 0.4 percent for the month and $1.15 or 3.9 percent for the year.

cpa firms employ 529,700 in the eighth straight month of slow growth, up 4,100 or 0.8 percent for the month and 22,500 or 4.4 percent for the year. workers logged 37.5 hours, up 6 minutes or 0.3 percent for the month and 24 minutes or 1.1 percent for the year. they earned $42.64 an hour, up 12 cents or 0.3 percent for the month and $3.58 or 9.2 percent for the year.

staff at cpa firms numbered 364,900, up 2,200 or 0.6 percent for the month and 15,400 or 4.4 percent for the year. they worked 36.1 hours, up 24 minutes or 1.1 percent for the month and 42 minutes or 2 percent for the year. they made $32.61, up 14 cents or 0.4 percent for the month and $2.01 or 6.6 percent for the year.

tax preparation services

tax prep employed 96,500, up 1,000 or 1 percent for the month and 3,300 or 3.5 percent for the year.

payroll services had 203,800 employees, down 400 or 0.2 percent for the month but up 14,300 or 7.5 percent for the year. they worked 36 hours, down 54 minutes or 2.4 percent for the month and 12 minutes or 0.6 percent for the year. earnings at $35.08 were at their lowest point since july 2020, down $1.88 or 5.1 percent for the month and $4.59 or 11.6 percent for the year.

staff in payroll numbered 166,900, up 100 or 0.1 percent for the month and 12,900 or 8.4 percent for the year. their 35.2-hour workweek was down 1 hour 12 minutes or 3.3 percent for the month and 1 hour 48 minutes or 4.9 percent for the year. earnings at $30.45 were down 8 cents or 0.3 percent for the month but up 36 cents or 1.2 percent for the year.

bookkeeping

other accounting services have edged upward for eight straight months and topped out at 295,100, up 1,300 or 0.4 percent for the month and 13,300 or 4.7 percent for the year.

women

there are 708,400 women in the accounting profession, up 200 or statistically flat for the month and 27,900 or 4.1 percent for the year. in cpa firms they number 317,200, up 1,900 or 0.6 percent for the month and 7,300 or 2.4 percent for the year. women in payroll services numbered 102,500, down 1,100 or 1.1 percent for the month but up 8,500 or 9 percent for the year.
