accounting influencers
with rob brown

the accounting profession is facing a turning point as major firms scale back diversity, equity, and inclusion (dei) initiatives, raising concerns about how the shift could affect talent recruitment, retention, and competitiveness.

kpmg recently discontinued its “accelerate 2025” program, which aimed to expand leadership diversity. deloitte pulled back last year, joining other global corporations—including goldman sachs, meta, and google—that have pared down similar efforts.

the shifts come as political and legal pressures mount. states such as florida and texas have rolled back dei policies in higher education, and a supreme court ruling on affirmative action has sent ripples across corporate america. firms that once championed dei are now weighing compliance risks and financial implications against potential reputational and workforce consequences.

the $100,000 h-1b shock: what it means for accounting talent

what changes, what doesn’t, for thousands of jobs in accounting.

in tax and audit in 2024, increases in salary bands were far from evenly distributed.

by dominic piscopo

i just consumed hours of h-1b visa content, so you don’t have to. here are my findings.

accounting isn’t the heaviest h-1b user (that’s it & tech.), but the profession still relies on international grads in audit, tax, advisory, and increasingly data and automation roles. in 2024, uscis approved around 400k h-1bs overall, with 2% to 3% of those in categories that could include accounting. so, while other industries are far more reliant on this program, there may still be thousands of roles in accounting. read more →

five common pitfalls and how to overcome them

man walking across marble floor with large holes in it

transitioning isn’t always smooth sailing.

by jackie meyer

when i made the decision to shift from a compliance-heavy firm to an advisory-first firm focused on delivering measurable roi, i wish i could say it was seamless. it wasn’t. this kind of transformation brings new opportunities, but it also brings challenges – some that you can anticipate, and others that take you by surprise. the key to success isn’t avoiding challenges altogether (that’s impossible); it’s learning to navigate them when they arise.

i have always been a huge football fan. i played football in high school until a knee injury cut short my road to the nfl (just kidding), but my love of the game continues to this day. when i was a kid, there was a football game that i received one christmas that i spent countless hours playing. the game was powered by electricity. the game board was designed as a football field, and there were 22 little plastic players that would form two teams. the players were about 2 to 3 inches tall, with a rubber piece on the bottom that had two flanges that you could move directionally and in theory affect how the piece would move on the board once the power button was hit.

bissett bullet: a higher standard of proposal

today’s bissett bullet: “your proposal document is what will differentiate you from the competition and show why that business should break away from their current accountant. to do so, it must speak to them on a level they understand.”

by martin bissett

most proposal documents focus on one area. the accountancy firm, the services on offer and their associated cost. you must operate to a higher standard than that.

your proposal must tell the prospective client’s story. what their obstacles have been, their major business goals and what the opportunities now are, as you see them.

it must demonstrate that you are a better option than they currently have, because you are invested in their goals and are in the business of achieving them by removing their obstacles and maximizing their opportunities.

today’s to-do:

take a proposal of yours that has yet to be sent and review it. does it fit the description above of a higher standard of proposal document? if not, there is still time. reflect on the notes you took at the first meeting and use them to update it.

running a modern accounting firm requires more than technical expertise. partners must balance client relationships, business development, and administrative responsibilities, often leaving firms stretched thin.

in a recent episode of it’s not just the numbers, doug gocke, chief operations officer at a mid-sized california firm, describes how restructuring responsibilities and focusing on operations helped his firm double revenue in six years without significantly increasing staff or client count.
