the new 2013-2014 edition of the rosenberg survey (full report here) shows cpa firms posting “their first respectable results since before the recession,” according to the authors of the 194-page study of more than 100 benchmarks at 390 firms, including 19 sole proprietors, all grossing more than $2 million. read more →

11 tests to measure the health of your firm’s partner group

what it means to be a partner.

by robert j. lees and august j. aquila
creating the effective partnership

partners are the culture in a professional service firm – what they believe, what they reward, what they do and how they do it determines what and how things get done. but, one of the problems we consistently hear about is the lack of clarity in what being a partner means. in the absence of clarity, the partners typically fill the gap by doing what they think it means, with all of the differences of thought and behavior that inevitably brings. it’s these differences in behavior that result in firms failing to maximize their potential.

if actions speak louder than words, what does that say about your firm’s core values?

by august j. aquila and robert j. lees

creating the effective partnership

the concept of core or shared values gets a lot of press and most professional service firms’ websites promote their core values to prospects, clients and recruits. but, like so many management ideas that are on the soft side, they are often more talk than reality.

creating the effective partnership:  every partner’s first question: ‘what’s in it for me?’  |  the 9 building blocks of a winning vision that the big four have discovered  |   the politics of an accounting firm partnership  |  nine rules to creating highly effective partnership teams   |   audacious vision and grand purpose prove essential to cpa success | are you creating a sustainable firm? | the debilitating effects of denial at accounting firms | the five psychological hurdles that cpa firms must confront today

for too many firms, their espoused core values don’t actually represent what the firm stands for and don’t guide individual behavior. often, in fact, neither the partners nor the employees know the firm’s core values and no one in the firm is evaluated or rewarded on how well they live them. read more →

now five years since the banking crash that forced record layoffs at tax and accounting firms, new survey results from 卡塔尔世界杯常规比赛时间 research show intensifying competition for talent, with more than 42% of accountants reporting that their firms are hiring and about half of all staffers ready to make a move.

“there’s a labor shortage out there,” according to chris hatcher, a partner at louisville, ky., baldwin cpas. “finding good talent is hard.” hatcher says baldwin cpas is looking for professionals with ambition, which he defines as an “owners  mentality.”

in this report, 卡塔尔世界杯常规比赛时间 research:

– reports the percentage of firms hiring, cutting or holding steady on headcount in the next six to 12 months;
– gathers comment from a representative sample of professionals on key economic and business trends; and

from this week’s research update. see the complete newsletter here

i’m looking over the responses to our new cpa careers survey. and one from a veteran senior finance manager at a fortune 1000 company stands out for its practicality and wisdom. his advice begins…

1. if you aren’t a cpa already, make it a goal.

2. if you need hours, apply to every accounting firm that you could drive to or are willing to move close to.

3. apply beginning in mid-april, after busy season, when accounting firms clean house.

sleeter: inside the mind of the client

a beautiful time to be an accountant focusing on technology for small business.

peering into the mind of the small business client, doug sleeter, head of the the sleeter group, sees some real concerns.

http://cpaclick.com/rtasc100“if you’re a business owner today,” says sleeter. “the pressure to go online” is overwhelming. clients know “if you’re going to succeed in business you’re going to be doing things online.”

so, “accountants are being pulled online by their clients,” he says. many clients need to begin selling online to remain competitive, even if they still have a thriving on-premise business. it’s not optional anymore.

the good news is “they need the help of the accounting professional,” sleeter says. “so this a beautiful time to be that accounting professional focussing on technology.”

at 20 years old, the world was a blank canvas with vast opportunities for sal inserra. he thought he knew exactly what he wanted in life.

“until,” he once told me, “i was set straight.”

like many cpas, sal owes much of his career and success to a few key mentors who guided him early on.

today — as the kids head back to school and college, and as the rest of us wind up our summers and look ahead to the fall — it may be a good time to salute the mentors who help steward a great profession to the next generation. read more →

every partner’s first question: ‘what’s in it for me?’

by august j. aquila and robert j. lees
creating the effective partnership

although the whole purpose of engaging the partners is to commit them to the firm’s future, they also have to see a personal upside in the final destination. that upside can take many forms but it has to be spelled out. it’s critical that the descriptions are honest. smart people quickly stop trusting their leaders if they believe they are being lied to or the downsides glossed over.

creating the effective partnership:   the 9 building blocks of a winning vision that the big four have discovered  |   the politics of an accounting firm partnership  |  nine rules to creating highly effective partnership teams   |   audacious vision and grand purpose prove essential to cpa success | are you creating a sustainable firm? | the debilitating effects of denial at accounting firms | the five psychological hurdles that cpa firms must confront today

if, for example, achieving scale is achievable only through a merger, the likely impact of the merger on partner earnings must be addressed. smart people know that earnings may be flat, or even drop, in the short term. the key thing is that the upsides to both the firm and the partners make the initial sacrifice worthwhile. read more →

research update: working la vida 24/7

it’s the last week of august. are you working?

the answer is probably, according to our surveys. working out of the office, on the go, in the car, remotely, virtually, 24/7/365 is very much a reality. (well, except for that one cpa we know whose standing out-of-office message reads: “i don’t open my email. call me if you send me something.”)

but for many accountants, working outside of the office is no longer a matter of getting more work done. it’s about improving life.  “being connected through a smart phone and e-mail allow me to work toward achieving that ever-elusive work-personal-life balance,” one senior staffer told me.
