the leadership at virtually every mainstream accounting firm in the us. now recognizes that they are already using software-as-a-service or “cloud-based” software applications and they regard the move to the cloud as inevitable for the profession.
according to new survey results, they differ only on when, and how fast.
question: i have a friend that runs a small cpa firm. he has a client that owns some motels across the u.s. who sold them to a large company. their auditor, a big 4 firm, would like to review his prior year audit papers and he has asked me to review his workpapers beforehand and make sure that they are in good shape for the big 4 firm. as he is a small practice his workpapers are likely to be not as sophisticated as the big 4 is used to seeing. do you know to what extent he would be required to show his work? would it be sufficient to show the trial balamnce with a narrative indicating the work performed on each line item that is deemed to be in scope? would it be sufficient to show a checklist indicating the procedures performed? would he be required to show all the detailed work papers? read more →
how many of these common errors or omissions can you find on your business card?
by sandi smith, cpa
the lowly business card: we don’t give it a second thought before we get the thing printed up, and we just do what everyone else does.
many people, new in business, get the business cards printed before they’re really ready to, which causes many of the mistakes i list below. experienced or new, you’re missing huge opportunities to let your business card take some of the work off your shoulders. we may take it for granted, but i feel that your business card is one of your most important pieces of marketing collateral, and the most under-utilized.

how strong management spells the most reliable path to profits.
by marc rosenberg, cpa
if partners of firms across the country were asked what the key was to the success of legendary fortune 500 companies such as general electric, coca-cola, ibm and countless others, i’m sure that the words “strong management” and “strong leadership” would dominate their responses. yet, ask those same partners to evaluate their own firms’ management, and if they are honest, their responses would not be very flattering.
of all of the techniques for improving cpa firm profitability, none is more effective than strong management and leadership. yet, nothing is more elusive. why is this?
there is an old saying that “no man is an island unto himself.” this is certainly true in the world that i live in. i am nothing without my clients. so when we have time with them it is important that we use it to maximum advantage. and having an agenda in place well before the meeting starts exponentially increases the productivity and value of the experience. read more →
the profession may consider cpa firm succession a crisis, but you’d hardly know it from how little cpas are doing about it.
some 79% of cpa firms surveyed say succession will be an issue for them within the next 10 years.
but only about 1 in 4 are doing anything about it.
sure, 46% of multi-partner firms now say they have a succession plan. and that’s better than the last such study. but, says dominic cingoranelli at the succession institute, which delivers succession-planning strategies to cpa firms and authored the study, “the idea is still is not getting all that much traction.”
