eleven things partners must do

what makes a great partnership

partners are the culture in a professional service firm – what they believe, what they reward, what they do and how they do it determines what and how things get done. but one of the problems we consistently hear about is the lack of clarity in what being a partner means. and in the absence of clarity, the partners typically fill the gap by doing what they think it means, with all of the differences of thought and behavior that inevitably brings. it’s these differences in behavior that result in firms failing to maximize their potential.

how to be a small business advisor

two businesspeople meeting over coffeeyou’re more than what you think you are.

by jody padar
the radical cpa

to me, to be the most trusted business advisor is to be a small business advisor. that’s what my customers see.

my firm serves small businesses from the ground up to $10 million. yes, we look at their numbers, but practically speaking one gains a lot when you’re in their financial underwear drawer. most of our conversations are around their questions. it’s a natural extension of the work we already do – financials, taxes, payroll, cash flow and forecasting.

why is change so hard for firms?

professional services marketing 3.0

editor’s note: 卡塔尔世界杯常规比赛时间 was privileged to have a long relationship with bruce w. marcus, who was ahead of his time in his thinking and practice in marketing for accounting. we are publishing some of the late expert’s evergreen work, which retains wisdom for the present.

at the same time, in the midst of all that’s changing in the professional world, i’m surprised that change in the marketing process for professional services is evolving so slowly. there are indeed exceptions, in which a handful of firms have extensive programs that are innovative, and very large staffs to execute them. these few firms have specialists in such activities as business development, media relations and so forth, but considering the vast number of accounting firms, their number is a small percentage of the professions.

by russ alan prince

single-family offices are proving to be the preferred way the super-rich (net worth = us $500 million or more) optimize their financial and personal lives. the power of the family office model has become well recognized by wealthy individuals and families who are far from super-rich. these wealthy individuals and families are gravitating to family office practices at an exponentially greater rate.

why time tracking still matters

if your team dismisses timesheets as old school, you may want to rethink that strategy.

first, let’s dismiss all the consultants who tell us time tracking and productivity metrics don’t matter. for the most part, these consultants have never managed or owned cpa firms. rarely have they worked in firms for any length of time. they have never known the struggles of meeting payroll the first pay period in february, when employee hours are up but the tax season money is not rolling in yet.

here’s an example that shows why time tracking and productivity metrics matter:

procedures require regular revisiting

by penny breslin
it’s not just the numbers

once you have your procedures, you can assign tasks to your team members. because we perform back office work for many accounting firms, we often adapt to other firms’ workflows. we are often on their workflows for our tasking but internally we also needed a simple means of tasking. another easily integrated app with slack provided this, teamline. with teamline we just type /teamline into any channel and:

  • create a new task on the fly or use a premade template
  • assign it to a team member
  • set a due date
  • attach a file
  • add a checklist of items

teamline notifies both the assignee and the creator as to the progress of the task automatically. integration to our google calendar puts the teamline task into the calendar. we never leave slack while doing this as the integration between slack, teamline and google calendar is seamless.

how do you value your most important asset?

yes, your employees.

skills, abilities and experience are the elements recruiters use to assess candidates who come before them. but what is interesting is despite a skill set playing  a dominant role in the value that an employee brings to the organization, it may not be recognized as such. this is not a new concept. i came across research conducted in 1918 by harvard university, the carnegie foundation and stanford research center.
